Upcoming Events in Bath, Maine

The Curtis Memorial Library in Bath will be running a Japan Week theme. Planned activities will include, but are not limited to, Japanese storytelling, origami, calligraphy, manga, and Japanese authors. There will be a display from the Bath-Tsugaru Program as well. The theme will run for two weeks from June 29 to July 12. Please contact the library or check their website for more information as to specific events and displays for each day.

Also, please join Friends of Aomori and other members of the Maine community in celebration on July 4th in Bath, Maine. The Bath-Tsugaru Exchange Program will participate in the Heritage Days Parade and carry an extraordinary Neputa float. The parade begins at 10:00AM at the corner of North and Lincoln Street. We are excited to announce a new membership program that will begin soon. If you are interested in getting involved with the Maine-Aomori Sister-State Relationship, the first step is to become a “Friend of Aomori.” There are the no fees or dues; however, donations are always appreciated.

By becoming a “Friend of Aomori,” you will be placed on our email list and we will contact you when there is noteworthy news about the relationship. In addition, you will be invited to our many programs and functions throughout the year.

Saco River Market May 2

Please come and support Friends of Aomori and the Maine-Aomori school exchanges at the Saco River Market (110 Main St. Saco) on May 2, 2015 from 9:00AM to 12:00PM. Join us in making your own Japanese helmet, decorating your own fish lantern, and taking “selfies” in traditional Japanese clothing. There will be live Taiko Drumming and and you can learn to play the Japanese board game Go and partake in a raffle!

Support Maine-Japan School Exchanges on March 29th at the Saco River Market!

Support Maine-Japan school exchanges at the Saco River Winter Market on March 29th, 9:00 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.! Join us to learn the Japanese food art decoration called Mukimono, and participate in sushi roll making, creating Japanese handcrafts such as origami and fish lanterns, and see all the Japanese-related items vendors will have on display!

Event Schedule:

9:00 -9:45 Japanese Handcrafts for Spring – Origami, kirigami, kumihimo and fish lanterns! $5 drop in fee

10:00 – 10:45 The Ancient Art of Mukimono – Learn to make cute Japanese garnishes for your Spring brunch! $10 drop in fee (1st ten participants receive a toolkit!)

11:00 -11:45 Sushi Making demo with Sushi connoisseur, Eric – Learn how to roll your own! $25 drop in fee

All workshops will take place in the Market’s Teaching Space!

For the last 20 years Maine students from five public schools have traveled to Aomori bi-annually and hosted Aomori students in Maine. We will celebrate this enduring international friendship in November, 2014. You can ensure the continuation of these valuable exchanges!
